Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and the rest of the Clippers certainly aren’t afraid to embrace the challenge of picking a fight with Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and the rest of the Lakers. The bodies on court from opening tip until the final whistle serve as proof that the games between these two mean more than anyone was willing to let on when Paul joined the Clippers instead of the Lakers last month.

The best part is the Lakers and Clippers are not alone. The authentic nastiness that many of us grew up with, that made the NBA so special during the Showtime Lakers-Big Three Celtics era through the Bad Boy Pistons-Jordan Bulls era and beyond, is popping up all over the league.

The Bulls and Pacers didn’t exactly exchange hugs and kisses at the United Center last night either. In fact, reigning MVP and Bulls star Derrick Rose said he will not forget the way the Pacers celebrated after the game, per ESPNChicago.com:

“They are just thrilled to get the win here,” Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. “They were crushed that we didn’t beat them last year in the playoffs.”

Ronnie Brewer, who started in place of Luol Deng and scored 20 points, said the Bulls could hear the Pacers’ celebration continue from the court to the locker room.”When you’re walking off the court, you’re in the same corridor,” Brewer said on “The Waddle & Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000. “And we were walking into our locker room, and you could hear those guys celebrating, cheering, screaming, and that kind of hit home with a lot of guys on our team.

“We’re all competitors. They’re in our division. Every time we play them it’s a tough matchup. And especially in front of our fans, you don’t want to have a letdown and lose at home. To hear them do like that adds a little fuel to the fire. We talked about it after the game.”

There is clearly a healthy amount of disdain between players on both sides that made their playoff matchup last season a treat and will continue to fuel the fire between these two Central Division rivals for years to come.

Paul missed five straight games with a strained hamstring but found his way back to the Clippers’ starting lineup for the Lakers. There’s no coincidence there. No one paying close attention in Southern California is dismissing the rivalry anymore. And from what it looked like last night, it took the Clippers, of all teams, to finally wake the Lakers up, as Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com pointed out:

“There’s a point where I step in and Metta steps in when things get a little too chippy,” Kobe Bryant said after the game. “It’s like, enough of the bullcrap.”

Ah, but it’s enough only for one night.

This isn’t over. Paul made sure to serve that notice.

It was one game. There will be more.

As he walked out of the arena late Wednesday night, Paul stopped for a moment to break something down with Chauncey Billups. Griffin had stepped out of bounds before shooting what would’ve been a game-tying 3-pointer. Paul and Billups blamed themselves and got to work on the next time around.

“We’re two guards who pride ourselves on executing in the last few minutes,” he said. “We let that one get away from us.”

사실 당연히 만기 계약이라 생각했던 러브가 단지 4년 연장에 그쳐 조금의 의아함도 있었는데,

세세한 내용을 보니 충분히 수긍할만한 딜인듯 하네요.

Love Signs Deal, Wolves On Notice

HANG TIME MIDWEST BUREAU – Sometimes, less really is more. That motto of minimalists and Hoarders Anonymous resonated Wednesday morning with the news of forward Kevin Love’s decision to sign a contract extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves for less than the maximum deal he could have received.

Is that as good as the five-year deal his pal from UCLA, Russell Westbrook, got from the Oklahoma City Thunder? Or draftmate Derrick Rose inked in Chicago? In sheer dollars, no. But in this particular case, Love might be better off. Remember, the tricky part about locking in for five years is that he’d be committing to the Timberwolves for as long as they’d be committing to him. And right now, Love is more of a sure thing at 24 points and 13 rebounds nightly than the intriguing-but-hardly proven basketball team in Minnesota and the civilians that operate it.

Re-upping cornerstone guys is one thing; Minnesota has done it before with Kevin Garnett and Al Jefferson. But finding the right help to put around them, and saying no to the wrong pieces, is something the franchise has struggled with. Whether drafting, trading or assessing free agents, past and present regimes at Target Center have whiffed in both directions. The Wolves have churned under both Kevin McHale and David Kahn as chief basketball execs, with and without Garnett and Jefferson on board. That has resulted in too-frequent coaching changes and seven straight lottery finishes.

While Love is giving up some long-term financial security, he’s gaining more control over his competitive future.

He had to forsake millions of dollars to do it — not that Minnesota was talking five years, anyway, which he admitted he wanted badly — but the ETO beats the alternative of finding himself someday as the Wolves’ only valuable piece, alone on a shelf, his season ending in April every year. Besides, barring severe injury, Love will still be only 26 years old on July 1, 2015, by which time a whole series of Timberwolves decisions will determine whether the team faces its own version of The Decision.

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – It’s been a while since we’ve heard from NBA Commissioner David Stern in this space. He was such a huge presence ’round these parts during the lockout that we felt it necessary to give him a little break in the aftermath of the deal getting done and the season starting.

On Howard:

OS: What do you think the effect would be on the Magic franchise if Dwight leaves?

Stern: We’ve had players depart franchises from time immemorial. I remember there was this other large person, now a television commentator, that once left. And I think that I saw Orlando blossom and thrive and build a new arena. So I think this is not a life-threatening event when players move. It depends upon who replaces them and how the community rallies around them.

OS: Some people would counter — perhaps even some from within the franchise — that it took the franchise a decade to recover and that even then it took the luck of a pingpong ball and some smart drafting to select Dwight.

Stern: Smart drafting is a wonderful thing. A smart free-agent signing is a wonderful thing. Smart trades are a wonderful thing, and that’s a function of management. And when you have a 30-team league, you’ll have to see how that works out. Everyone wrote off poor little old Memphis because Pau Gasol left, and the best they could talk about was the 48th pick in the draft that turned out to be this guy Marc Gasol, who is now a maximum-contract center. It depends. These things have a life of their own that have to be analyzed. Implicit in your question, I guess, is that we should tell players that whoever drafts them that’s where they must play for their entire professional career. Is that your view?

On the lockout:

OS: When you look back at the CBA negotiations, do you see anything that could have been done differently that would have expedited the process?

Stern: No. I don’t.

OS: From the owners’ perspective, do you believe this will be a 10-year agreement or a 6-year agreement?

Stern: It’s hard not to confuse my expectation with my hope. My hope is it’s a 10-year agreement. I think that the owners, from their side, the only issue that the owners will have is whether it does enough for the business. But I think it does. And I think that it levels the playing field and will continue to level it and it aligns paying with performance in a very positive way. So I think the owners will not opt out of it after six years.

락아웃에 대해서,

OS : CBA 협상에 대해 다시 상기해 본다면, 당시 길었던 협상 과정을 보다 좀더 빠르게 할수 있었던 다른 것들이 있을 수도 있었다고 생각하십니까?

스턴 : 그렇게 생각하지 않습니다.

OS : 구단주의 입장에서, 이번 CBA 협상이 향후 10년간 지속될것이라고 생각합니까? 혹은, 단지 6년간 지속될 것이라 생각합니까?

스턴 : 제 바램을 담은 기대를 현실과 혼동하지 않는 것은 어렵지만, 제 바램을 담아 말한다면 이번 계약이 향후 10년간 지속될 계약이라고 생각합니다. 제가 생각하길, 구단주 그들 입장에서 본다면 구단주가 상관하는 오직 한가지 문제는 그것이 충분히 수지타산이 맞는 일인가입니다. 그리고 이번 계약은 충분히 그러한 그들의 입장을 만족시켜줄수 있습니다. 제가 생각하기에 이번 CBA계약은 NBA 전반을 평준화 시킬 것이고 또한 계속적으로 그러한 기능을 할것입니다. 또한, 이번 CBA 계약은 팀과 선수들과간의 계약에 대해서 굉장히 긍정적으로 기능할 것입니다. 따라서, 제 생각엔 구단주들이 6년이 지난후에도 옵트아웃을 하지 않을 것이라 봅니다.

And finally, Stern on his future:

OS: You started your tenure as the NBA commissioner in 1984 and you turn 70 later this year. How much longer do you want to remain commissioner?

Stern: A little bit.

OS: Are you referring to one year? Five years? Ten years?

Stern: I think it’s fair to say that I won’t be commissioner when the owners have the opportunity to decide whether they are going to opt out of the agreement. The owners and the players are going to make that decision without me.

OS: Six years from now? Right?

Stern: Right. That’s all that I’ve said so far publicly, and that’s how I’m going to leave it. But stay tuned.

OS: Two years? Three years? Four?

Stern: I think we’ve got some work to do to get this thing back up-and-running post-lockout on a global and a digital basis. . . . You know, I love my job. And I think it’s as much fun now as it’s ever been. Really. But I think there will come a point when it’s time to say “enough is enough” and let other people do their job and do this job. That time is approaching. It’s not speeding, but it’s approaching.

마지막으로, 스턴, 자신의 미래에 관해서

OS : 지금부터 6년 후 말입니까? 정말입니까?

스턴 : 맞습니다. 그것이 지금까지 제가 공식적으로 말할 수 있는 전부이고, 앞으로 어떻게 제가 떠날지에 대한 것입니다. 그래도, 앞으로 어떤일이 일어날지 모르기에 계속 지켜보시는게 좋을 듯 합니다.

OS : 그 말씀은 향후 6년이 아닌 2년 후나 3년 후 혹은 4년 후가 될 수도 있다는 말씀이십니까?

스턴 : 제 생각엔, 우리가 해야 할 것은 락아웃 이후 리그를 전반적으로 그리고 디지털적으로 다시 정상화시키는 것이라는 겁니다. 알다시피, 저는 제 직업을 사랑합니다. 그리고 저에겐 지금까지 그래왔던 것처럼 NBA 총재라는 직책은 지금 이 순간이 전보다 더 재미있는것 같습니다. 진심입니다. 그리고 언젠간 "이제 그만" 이라고 말하고, 다른 사람들에게 그들이 해야할 일을 하게 하고 NBA 총재란 직책을 인계할 수 있을 때가 올것입니다. 그리고 그 시기는 점점 다가오고 있습니다. 빠르지는 않지만, 점점 다가오고 있습니다.

개인적으로 흔들림없이 NBA를 지켜오는 스턴을 호의적으로 바라보는 편인데요,

물론, 이번 락아웃기간에서 보았듯이 약간은 독불적인 면도 없진 않지만 사람들의 비난과 우려를 결과로써 증명해내며 자신의 입지를 단단히 하는 모습이 어떤 면에서는 총재란 위치는 아무나 하는 것이 아니구나 생각도 들게 했었습니다.

Rosen’s Report: Lakers at Heat

Kobe Bryant is aching to show that he, and not LeBron James, is the game’s most dominant player in tonight’s game in Miami (8 ET, TNT). And that he can lead the Lakers to another championship without being somewhat overshadowed by Phil Jackson and the triangle offense.

Meanwhile, LeBron wants to prove that he is indeed capable of excelling in clutch situations in big-time games.  If this does come to pass (and shoot, and defend), then Miami can stake its claim as overwhelming favorites to win the last game of the season. And with Dwyane Wade unavailable, LBJ will enjoy twice as much ball-time as will Kobe.

HOW THE LAKERS CAN WIN: Matt Barnes provides scrappy, ball-sniping defense against LeBron.  As a change of pace, Metta World Peace can defend LBJ with a belligerent physicality.  Throw in some judicious double-teams, and James just might be a mite discombobulated.

* Pau Gasol’s long-armed defense will trouble Chris Bosh.  When Bosh receives the ball on the right side of  the court, his jumper is significantly more accurate and, from there, he also looks to drive right along the baseline.  This is when and where he should be two-timed.  No such measures need to taken when he sets up on the left side of the court.  Also, Gasol can outreach Bosh’s defense in the low-post.

* Since Joel Anthony is no threat to score, Andrew Bynum can ignore him on the defensive end and devote himself to protecting the rim.  On the downhill end of the court, Bynum is simply too big and strong for even Anthony’s energetic defense to be effective.
